JT

When I look at Lord Byron’s poem “When We Two Parted” I noticed it to be very similar to one of my favorite musical artist’s songs “What Goes Around (Comes Around)” by Justin Timberlake. In both the song and the poem, the main idea is losing somebody and really feeling the heartache. They both didn’t see the split coming, and were very in love with this person before the relationship ended. Now they both feel very lonely and still long for the person they lost. It also seems that they both were betrayed by their loved one, and are looking back on it now realizing they probably should have seen this coming.

The only difference I see between these two is that in Timberlake’s song he feels more vengeful and that she is going to get what she deserves in the end. Whereas Lord Byron’s poem focuses more on his loneliness now and almost depression that he feels after losing that person. This is what I think, but hers the lyrics to “What Goes Around” and the lines to “When We Two Parted” and I’ll let you decide for yourself.

"What Goes Around... / ...Comes Around Interlude"

Hey girl, is he everything you wanted in a man?
You know I gave you the world
You had me in the palm of your hand
So why your love went away
I just can't seem to understand
Thought it was me and you babe
Me and you until the end
But I guess I was wrong

Don't want to think about it
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it
I just can't do without ya
Tell me is this fair?

Is this the way it's really going down?
Is this how we say goodbye?
Should've known better when you came around
That you were gonna make me cry
It's breaking my heart to watch you run around
'Cause I know that you're living a lie
That's okay baby 'cause in time you will find...

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

Now girl, I remember everything that you claimed
You said that you were moving on now
And maybe I should do the same
Funny thing about that is
I was ready to give you my name
Thought it was me and you, babe
And now, it's all just a shame
And I guess I was wrong

Don't want to think about it
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it
I just can't do without ya
Can you tell me is this fair?

When We Two Parted

  When we two parted
In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this.

The dew of the morning
Sank chill on my brow -
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame:
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame.

They name thee before me,
A knell in mine ear;
A shudder come o'er me -
Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee,
Who knew thee too well: -
Long, long shall I rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.

In secret we met -
In silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive.
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee? -
With silence and tears.
